Restoration

Natural hydraulic lime in restoration to respect historic buildings

Used since prehistoric times, lime has accompanied the evolution of construction processes until the present day, especially starting from the 12th century and during the Renaissance period.

The discovery of cement in the 19th century led to faster construction times and progressively replaced lime However, in terms of conservation, lime ensures infinitely superior results to cement. Natural lime is in fact more environmentally-friendly, more breathable and more adaptable to the movement of buildings.

The use of restoration products such as plasters made from natural hydraulic lime yet with the addition of cement can cause a decline in the building’s resistance to humidity: this is why it is recommended to use products that respect the original structure, such as pure natural hydraulic lime, for restorations.

When natural hydraulic lime is used in restoration

In restoration work, it is important to reproduce the components of the historical architecture from a chemical and physical point of view. Natural hydraulic lime is a binder that best meets this criteria as it has characteristics similar to those originally used in historic buildings.

Natural hydraulic lime can be used in the preparation of:

  • Masonry mortar
  • Lime plasters and renders for interior and exterior building restoration
  • Grout
  • Lime glaze coatings for restoration
  • Natural hydraulic lime injections
  • Sealing
  • Natural hydraulic lime external thermal insulation composite system
  • Floor screeds
  • Lime paints for restoration, natural and without additives
  • High-level finishes

These products, made from natural hydraulic lime only, can then be used for:

  • Restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings
  • Monumental restoration
  • Consolidation of masonry with natural hydraulic lime
  • Finishes, including coloured versions

Advantages of using natural hydraulic lime in restoration

  • 01.

Helps prevent rising damp and infiltration of moisture.

  • 02.

Breathable and resistant to mould, stains and plaster detachment.

  • 03.

Care for the environment and people. Indeed, it is also suitable for use in green building.

  • 04

High flexibility in following the thermal movements of buildings without cracking or detaching.

  • 05

Compatible with historical materials both chemically and physically.

Calce dei Berici

Natural hydraulic lime

Calce dei Berici is pure natural hydraulic lime produced exclusively by firing a calcareous marl in running kilns at temperatures below 900°C. Subsequently, the lime is seasoned for an extended period of time to ensure its complete hydration, before being ground and refined with wind separators.
